Animal Sanctuary Worker Job Description
10 hours per week distributed over 4 days in exchange for room and board (water, electricity and internet), excluding food. See below for photos of the room and house.
8 weeks off per year. Sometimes additional hours may be necessary due to unusual circumstances.
Opportunities to earn in other ways are available and will be supported including growing and selling produce, fixing, upcycling or creating things to sell locally. Those able to work or study online would be well suited.
Please note that this opportunity is very rural in the South Hokianga at 1347 Wekaweka road, Waimamaku.
Animal Sanctuary Worker Job Duties:

Checks on each animal daily (currently 6 adult cows, 6 calves, 2 sheep and 1 duck but may in future include many other types of animals).

Monitors food, water and shelter needs daily and provides what is lacking

Immediately feeds back issues that are not able to be rectified immediately

Works to improve the conditions for the animals in conjunction with the organisational priorities and group goals.

Participates in ongoing approved education at the organisations expense or during work time, to upskill

Treats all animals like well-loved pets, training them only for their own benefit and with no pain or fear tactics.

Maintains records of animals health

Carries out regular health maintenance tasks

If necessary, carries out specific care tasks for individual animals needs

Maintains good hygiene and cleanliness of equipment, self and spaces to reduce infection risks

When around members of the public in an organisational role, to conduct yourself in a friendly and open manner

To comply with organisational policies and procedures

May include driving farm vehicles

Communicates with other team members in a timely and clear manner

Takes media of the animals (photos/videos) and posts to the organisational social media channels and also to update specific sponsors.

Participates in quality improvement to make communication, safety and processes better

Cleaning of the bathroom and toilet once per week

Vacuuming the house once per week

Mopping the house once per month
Desirable attributes:
Subscribes to a sustainable and plant-based way of life. Open and accepting of different lifestyles. Cleanliness, organisation, compassion, empathy, physical ability to carry up to 20kgs for short periods of times, able to walk at least 2kms a day, works well in a team but can work well alone. For when dealing with the public we would like you to be able to have difficult conversations without getting upset and good conflict resolution skills. Happy to live rurally and with minimal ‘frills’. Has their own transport and driving ability.
The board is currently a double room in a house that has 2 other rooms. These may be used by the owner or maybe rented. The bathroom, toilet, lounge and kitchen will be shared. Meals may be shared when it suits.
In the near future we hope to have a self-contained unit for the Animal Sanctuary Worker position, however, the hours of work would be increased to 16hours per week over 4 days at this time.
Priority will be given to those from minority communities and those with disabilities are welcome to apply. For the right applicant, we can work around some disabilities that might impact on some work areas.
